Heisenberg from "Copenhagen" by Michael Frayn
And that's when I did uncertainty. Walking round Faelled Park on my own one horrible raw February night. It's very late, and as soon as I've turned off into the park I'm completely alone in the darkness. I start to think about what you'd see, if you could train a telescope on me from the mountains of Norway. You'd see me by the street-lamps on the Blegdamsvej, then nothing as I vanished into the darkness, then another glimpse of me as I passed the lamp-post in front of the bandstand. And that's what we see in the cloud chamber. Not a continuous track but a series of glimpses - a series of collisions between the passing electron and various molecules of water vapor. . . . Or think of you, on your great papal progress to Leiden in 1925. What did Margrethe see of that, at home here in Copenhagen? A picture postcard from Hamburg, perhaps. Then one from Leiden. One from Göttingen. One from Berlin. Because what we see in the cloud chamber are not even the collisions themselves, but the water-droplets that condense around them, as big as cities around a traveller -- no, vastly bigger still, relatively -- complete countries -- Germany . . . Holland . . . Germany again. There is no track, there is no precise addresses; only a vague list of countries visited. I don't know why we hadn't thought of it before, except that we were too busy arguing to think at all.

"On the Steps of the Palace" from "Into the Woods"
He's a very smart prince
He's a prince who prepares
Knowing this time I'd run from him
He spread pitch on the stairs
I was caught unawares
Well it means that he cares
This is more than just malice
Better stop and take stock
While you're standing here stuck
On the steps of the palace
You think what do you want?
You think make a decision
Why not stay and be caught?
You think well it's a thought
What would be his response?
And then what if he knew who you were
And you know that you're not what
He thinks that he wants?
And then what if you are
What a prince would envision?
Although how can you know
Who you are till you know
What you want, which you don't
So then which do you pick?
Where you're safe, out of sight
And yourself but where everything's wrong
Or where everything's right but you know
That you'll never belong
And whichever you pick do it quick
'Cause you're starting to stick
To the steps of the palace
It's your first big decision
The choice isn't easy to make
To arrive at a ball is exciting and all
Once you're there, though, it's scary
And it's fun to deceive
When you know you can leave
But you have to be wary.
There's a lot that's at stake
But you've stalled long enough
'Cause you're still standing stuck
In the stuff on the steps
Better run along home
And avoid the collision
Even though they don't care
You'd be better off there
Where there's nothing to choose
So there's nothing to lose.
So you pry up your shoes
Then from out of the blue
And without any guide
I know what my decision is
Which is not to decide
I'll just leave him a clue
For example, a shoe
And then see what he'll do
Now it's he and not you
Who is stuck with a shoe
In a stew in the goo
And you've learned something too
Something you never knew
On the steps of the palace
He's a prince who prepares
Knowing this time I'd run from him
He spread pitch on the stairs
I was caught unawares
Well it means that he cares
This is more than just malice

"Soon As I Get Home" from "The Wiz"
There's a feeling here inside
That I cannot hide
And I know I've tried
But it's turning me around
I'm not sure that I'm aware
If I'm up or down
If I'm here or there
I need both feet on the ground
Why do I feel like I'm drowning
When there's plenty of air?
Why do I feel like frowning?
I think the feeling is fear
Here I am in a different place
In a different time
In this time and space
But I don't want to be here
I was told I must see the Wiz
But I don't know
What a wizard is
I just hope the Wiz is there
Maybe I'm just going crazy
Letting myself get uptight
I'm acting just like a baby
But I'm gonna be alright
Soon as I get home
As soon as I get home
In a different place
In a different time
Different people around me
I would like to know
Of their different world
And how different they find me
And just what's a Wiz
Is it big, will it scare me?
If I ask to leave
Will the Wiz even hear me?
How will I know then
If I can ever get home again?
Here I am alone
Though it feels the same
I don't know where I'm going
I'm here on my own
And it's not a game
And a strange wind is blowing
I am so amazed
At the things that I see here
Don't want to be afraid
I just don't want to be here
In my mind this is clear
What am i doing here?
I wish I was home
That I cannot hide
And I know I've tried
But it's turning me around
I'm not sure that I'm aware
If I'm up or down
If I'm here or there

Peter Stockmann from "An Enemy of the People" by Arthur Miller
Now this is our crisis. We know what this town was without our Institute. We could barely afford to keep the streets in condition. It was a dead, third-rate hamlet. Today we're just on the verge of becoming internationally known as a resort. I predict that within five years the income of every man in this room will be immensely greater. I predict that our schools will be bigger and better. And in time this town will be crowded with fine carriages; great homes will be built here; first-class stores will open all along Main Street. I predict that if we are not defamed and maliciously attacked we will someday be one of the richest and most beautiful resort towns in the world. There are your choices. Now all you've got to do is ask yourselves a simple question: Has any one of us the right, the "democratic right," as they like to call it, to pick at minor flaws in the springs, to exaggerate the most picayune faults?
(Cries of No, No!)
And to attempt to publish these defamations for the whole world to see? We live or die on what the outside world thinks of us. I believe there is a line that must be drawn, and if a man decides to cross that line, we the people must finally take him by the collar and declare, "You cannot say that!"
(There is an uproar of assent. Aslaksen rings the bell.)
All right then. I think we all understand each other. Mr. Aslaksen, I move that Doctor Stockmann be prohibited from reading his report at this meeting!

"That's What You Call a Dream" from "Bonnie and Clyde"
Just an ordinary life,
Easy days and quiet nights,
Lazy walks beside a stream:
Now that's what you call a dream.
No ideas and no big plans,
Happy with the way things are,
No one with a scam or scheme:
Now that's what you call a dream.
These dreams of yours make no sense at all.
It's what's inside, not what's out there.
We both could have a perfect life
And not go anywhere.
You miss a lot when you ask too much.
You're all I need not one thing more, Buck.
All I ever wanted
Is on this side of the door.
Children playing in the barn.
Buck is rocking in his chair.
In the house the candles gleam.
Now that's what you call a dream.
In the house the candles gleam.
Now that's what you call a dream.

"Defying Gravity" from "Wicked"
GLINDA
Why couldn't you have stayed clam for once? Instead of flying off the handle--
I hope you're happy
I hope you're happy now
I hope you're happy how you've
Hurt your cause forever
I hope you think you're clever
ELPHABA
I hope you're happy
I hope you're happy, too
I hope you're proud how you would
Grovel in submission
To feed your own ambition
GLINDA & ELPHABA
So though I can't imagine how
I hope you're happy
RIght now
GLINDA
Elphie, listen to me. Just say you're sorry!
You can still be with the Wizard
What you've worked and waited for
You can have all you've ever wanted--
ELPHABA
I know.
But I don't want it--no.
I can't want it anymore.
Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by
The rules of someone else's game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes and leap...
It's time to try defying gravity
I think I'll try defying gravity
And you can't pull me down
GLINDA
Can't I make you understand
You're having delusions of grandeur?
ELPHABA
I'm through accepting limits
'Cause someone says they're so
Some things I cannot change
But till I try I'll never know
Too long I've been afraid of
Losing love I guess I've lost
Well if that's love,
It comes at much too high a cost
I'd sooner buy defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye, I'm defying gravity
And you can't pull me down!
Glinda, come with me. Think of what we could do - together!
Unlimited
Together we're unlimited
Together we'll be the greatest team
There's ever been, Glinda
Dreams the way we planned them
GLINDA
If we work in tandem
GLINDA & ELPHABA
There's no fight we cannot win
Just you and I, defying gravity
With you and I defying gravity
ELPHABA
They'll never bring us down!
Well, are you coming?
GLINDA
I hope you're happy
Now that you're choosing this
ELPHABA
You too.
I hope it brings you bliss
GLINDA & ELPHABA
I really hope you get it
And you don't live to regret it
I hope you're happy in the end
I hope you're happy, my friend
ELPHABA
So if you can't find me
Look to the western sky
As someone told me lately
Everyone deserves the chance to fly
And if I'm flying solo
At least I'm flying free
To those who ground me
Take a message back from me
Tell them how I am defying gravity
I'm flying high, defying gravity
And soon I'll match them in renown
And nobody in all of Oz
No Wizard that there is or was
Is ever gonna bring me down!
GLINDA
I hope you're happy
CITIZENS OF OZ
Look at her
She's wicked
Get her!
ELPHABA
Bring me down!
CITIZENS OF OZ
No one mourns the wicked
So we got to bring her--
ELPHABA
Ahh!
CITIZENS OF OZ
--Down!

"I Know Things Now" from "Into the Woods"
Mother said, "straight ahead,
"Not to delay or be mislead"
I should've heeded her advice,
But he seemed so nice.
And he showed me things,
Many beautiful things
That I hadn't thought to explore.
They were off my path
So I never had dared.
I had been so careful,
I never had cared.
And he hade me feel excited-
Well, excited and scared.
When he said, "come in"
With that sickening grin,
How could I know what was in store?
Once his teeth were bared,
Though, I really got scared.
Well, excited and scared.
But he drew me close,
And he swallowed me down,
Down a dark slimy path
Where lie secrets that I never want to know.
And when everything familiar
Seemed to disappear forever,
At the end of the path,
was granny one again.
So we wait in the dark
Until someone sets us free,
And we're brought into the light,
And we're back at the start.
And I know things now,
Many valuable things
That I hadn't known before.
Do not put your faith
In a cape and a hood.
They will not protect you
The way that thy should.
And take extra care with strangers,
Even flowers have their dangers.
And though scary is exciting,
Nice is different than good.
Now I know: don't be scared.
Granny is right, just be prepared.
Isn't it nice to know a lot?
And a little bit not.
